For 36 years now, West Virginia University and the University of Pittsburgh have been facing off in what is affectionately known as "The Backyard Brawl", an annual football game between the rival schools. However, amidst all the rivalry, the two school's chapters of Alpha Phi Omega combine forces to complete a massive one-day relay between the two competing cities.
Since 1970, the brothers of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity have dedicated their efforts (and their legs) to the Run To/From Pitt, raising money and Autism awareness by participating in a 73-mile Route 19 relay between Morgantown, WV and Pittsburgh, PA.
The two chapters run the football that will be used in the game from the Opposing team city to the Home team city (stadium to stadium). Once the brothers reach the stadium hosting the match, they pass off the football to the two school's coaches, Rich Rodriguez and Walt Harris, completing that year's journey.
Throughout the fall before the Run begins, Brothers work within their campus and community to distribute information about the Autism Society and the Run, and to raise money for the event. For the Lambda Omicron Chapter at WVU, the annual Pass-a-Thon and Mountaineer Week have become integral parts of the Run. Brothers also gather both business and individual sponsors for the relay. |
